Syllabus

Obiettivi Formativi

The course provides the basics for understanding the global international business environment and the main factors affecting the competitiveness of multinational enterprises in the global marketplace within the present geopolitical framework. During the course will be presented and discussed internationalization theories, illustrated the main drivers of internationalization, discussed main factors affecting the market selection process, the entry strategies and location choices. The course also provides a critical for understanding the crisis of the globalization process in the present geopolitical framework and discusses the implication on international business and interntationalization strategies of companies. The managerial implications associated with building the organization and managing the operations of multinational enterprises in a global economy are also discussed, paying attention to the impact of national/regional difference in political economy, industrial policy and culture on firm’s strategic choices. The role and different forms of “psychical distance” in the internationalization processes are also analyzed and discuss with the support of selected case studies.
At the end of the course, students will be able both to understand and discuss the unique challenges of global business and to understand the main problems involved in conducting international business. Students will also be able to discuss, adopting a critical perspective, the theories of internationalization, the key determinants of strategy development in an international context, the alternative ways of organizing and managing the multinational enterprise. Finally, the student will be able to apply the theoretical foundations acquired to the analysis of business internationalization cases, which will be presented and discussed in class with managers from international companies

Prerequisiti

The course doesn't require previous knowledge of the international business principles, nevertheless the attendance of the courses of Management and Marketing will be useful to better understand strategic options available to firms operating in international markets

Metodi didattici

Frontal lessons integrated with seminars conducted by managers and institutional players invited to discuss specific case studies or international business experiences

Verifica Apprendimento

The exam is a written test lasting one and a half hours, consisting of three open-ended questions that cover all topics addressed during the course and the seminar sessions. Each question is graded on a scale of 0 to 10 points; active participation in the organized seminars earns a bonus of 0.5 points per seminar. There are no mid-term exams. Assessment is based on the following skills and competencies: understanding of the topics analyzed; ability to link these themes to emerging international scenarios; capacity for critical discussion of specific questions regarding emerging competitive dynamics; and clarity of expression.

Contenuti

The course provides a comprehensive overview of corporate internationalization strategies in the global market, analyzing the underlying motivations, entry modes, and key barriers to international expansion within the current competitive landscape. It establishes a foundation for critically analyzing the current crisis of globalization against the backdrop of the geopolitical scenario, aiming to equip students with the tools to understand and critically assess the potential impacts on foreign market selection, entry decisions, and growth strategies. The course also examines major theories of corporate internationalization and outlines key strategic options available to firms, focusing on the role of strategic alliances and the development of international network relationships. Special attention is paid to the role and nature of "psychic distance" in modern internationalization strategies, illustrated through the presentation and classroom discussion of specific business cases. Finally, the course addresses back-reshoring strategies and the role of technology clusters in supporting corporate internationalization within the context of the new economy of territorial competition.
