Obiettivi Formativi

At the end of the course, students will be able to:
describe the main economic theories addressing real and financial globalisation, distinguishing between mainstream and heterodox approaches;
explain the functioning of international economic relationships, with particular reference to international trade, foreign direct investment, financial markets and exchange-rate regimes;
analyse the determinants and interactions among the balance of payments, interest rates, exchange rates and the current account in an open economy;
interpret the main theoretical models of international macroeconomics, critically assessing their assumptions, implications and limitations;
evaluate the role of national and international economic policies in addressing macroeconomic and financial imbalances, with particular reference to the Eurozone;
apply the theoretical framework acquired during the course to the analysis of contemporary economic issues through the interpretation of macroeconomic and financial data;
prepare a basic empirical analysis and produce a short analytical report based on economic data (for students participating in the workshop activities).

Prerequisiti

No formal prerequisites are required. At least some basic knowledge of macroeconomics is strongly suggested.

Metodi didattici

Most of the course is carried out though traditional frontal teaching and presentations with slides derived from the official references. Some additional, non-compulsory material will be added on the e-learning. Some lessons are scheduled to carry out practical exercises on data downloading, elaboration and interpretation of results.

Verifica Apprendimento

The exam is exclusively written and lasts two hours. Students answer four questions out of five. Each answer is expected to be approximately one page in length. Attending students who submit the final workshop report answer three questions out of four in one hour and a half. The final grade is a weighted average of the individual written exam (80%) and the group work (20%). Each answer is assessed on the basis of: (i) the accuracy and completeness of the discussion; (ii) the understanding of the relevant theoretical concepts and their interrelationships; (iii) the ability to develop a coherent and well-structured argument; (iv) the use of appropriate economic terminology; and (v) the ability to critically discuss alternative theoretical interpretations where relevant. Final marks reflect the overall quality of the answers rather than their length.

Contenuti

The program is divided into a common program (parts 1 to 3; total: 27 hours) and a differentiated program (parts 4 and 5; total: 13 hours + 10 extra hours in computer room). All students must prepare parts 1 to 3 for the exam. Students not attending the lessons must prepare part 4 and exclude part 5. Attending students exclude part 4 and actively participate to the workshops to learn how to collect and analyse data on macroeconomic variables (part 5). Participants to the workshop will submit a final group work. Some of the issues treated in part 4 of the program will still be presented and discussed during the lessons, even though attending students (provided that they are truly present during the lessons) do not have to prepare them for the final exam.
