Syllabus
Obiettivi Formativi
The Bioeconomy, often referred to as a ‘biobased economy’, encompasses the production and exploitation of biobased resources and their conversion into food, feed, bioenergy, and biobased materials. A biobased value chain includes the primary production of biobased resources, their conversion to higher-value goods via processing, and commercialization on the market. This involves a variety of sectors and brings together different scientific disciplines and stakeholders. Thus, the field of the Bioeconomy is fertile ground for inter- and transdisciplinary research.
The course aims to introduce the basic tools used in economic analysis and the main aspects related to the circular Bioeconomy. It explores the economic and technological determinants of innovation and the role of intellectual property in the growth of new bio-based industries. Furthermore, the course intends to provide fundamental concepts regarding biotechnology regulation, safety, and legal compliance.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
Evaluate the environmental and socio-economic implications of the Bioeconomy transition autonomously and critically.
Communicate the business potential of new bio-based products and processes to different stakeholders and investors.
Identify key enabling technologies and market players in bio-based industries.
Assess patenting opportunities, licensing strategies, and collaborations with innovation partners.
Apply specific biotechnology regulations (safety, GMOs, industrial property) to ensure proper legal compliance in daily business activities.

Metodi didattici
The course consists of frontal lectures, seminars, practical sessions, and workshops, with discussion of scientific papers and case studies. These methods are designed to foster a direct application of the theoretical concepts discussed in class and stimulate interactive problem-solving.
Verifica Apprendimento
Assessment is based on a final written exam consisting of 2 "exercises" (composed of a series of numerical and multiple-choice questions) and 2 "open-ended questions", to be answered in 2 hours, covering the topics discussed during the course. Answers are evaluated based on the completeness and correctness of their content, as well as, for the open-ended questions, on the rigor of the logical argumentation, analytical precision, and the appropriate use of technical and legal terminology.
Students are offered the opportunity to take part, at the end of the course, in a workshop with a group project presentation (e.g., presenting a "bio-based" business idea or a case study). The workshop is assessed on the relevance of the analysis, the appropriate use of the economic tools presented in class, and the quality of the presentation. If the project is positively assessed, students may answer only 1 open-ended question and 1 exercise in the final written exam, with the exam duration reduced to 1 hour. In this case, the final grade is calculated by giving equal weight (50% and 50%) to the group project presentation grade and to the reduced written exam grade.

Contenuti
The course is organized into three main modules, for a total of 48 hours of classroom teaching:
Module 1 (18 hours): Economic Tools for Bioeconomy — principles of economics, bioeconomy, and the environment.
Module 2 (22 hours): Bioeconomy and Innovation — economics of innovation, knowledge, economic growth, entrepreneurship, and patent data analysis.
Module 3 (8 hours): Biotechnology Regulation and Compliance — industrial property legislation and biotechnology-specific regulation.
