Abstract:
The essay retraces the well-known and in many ways emblematic
story of Klimt’s painting ‘The Woman in Gold’ by reconstructing the history
of the painting and the legal proceedings in which it was involved.
The Woman in Gold case is particularly significant because it allows us to grasp
the main problems of restitutions: moral duty, the risk of the work no longer being visible to the public and the need to balance the previous owner’s
expectations with those of the community.
