Abstract:
Multiple renal arteries were noted in 28 (22.7%) of 123 subjects found to be normotensive a posteriori by selective angiography, whereas a similar anomaly was observed in 95 (44.3%) of hypertensive patients in an unselected series of 337 angiographies. The difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). The frequency of multiple arteries per decade of life increased in the hypertensives and decreased in the normotensives. In addition, their incidence was higher in essential (45.8%) than in secondary forms of hypertension (29.2%). These findings raise the question of whether multiple renal arteries constitute a factor encouraging the onset of essential hypertension.
