Course Objectives

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES The goal of this course is to furnish theoretical and applied knowledges about instrumental analytical chemistry. The student will acquire practical instrumental analysis skills, through laboratory practice. EXPECTED LEARNING RESULTS At the end of the course each student will be able to: 1. evaluate of the performances of analytical protocols; 2. apply instrumental calibration methods; 3. understand technical and applied features of atomic absorption and atomic emission spectroscopy; 4. understand technical and applied features of mass spectrometry; 5. understand technical and applied features of gas-chromatography (with recalls of liquid chromatography); 6. understand hyphenated techniques such as GC-MS, ICP-MS, LC-MS. 7. understand the theoretical basis of hardware organization for the above mentioned instrumentations; 8. calibrate analytical instruments; 9. apply extraction and preconcentration methods of liquid samples; 10. apply wet digestion methods for solid samples; 11. apply passive sampling and extraction methods for gas samples; 12. perform quantitative determinations with GC-FID, GC-ECD, GC-TCD, GC-MS; 13. perform quantitative determinations with FTIR, HPLC-UV/Vis; 14. perform quantitative determinations with ETAAS, ICP-MS; 15. elaborate the data obtained during the above mentioned laboratory determinations.

Course Prerequisites

The achievement of the second year course of Analytical Chemistry I is required. Knowledges deriving from the first year courses of chemistry, mathematics and physics are required. Basic knowledges of the utilisation of electronic spreadsheets are required.

Assessment Methods

An evaluation is forseen for each module. The exam will feature a written test and two oral examinations. The written test includes two question on topics discussed during the lectures plus an exercise of statistics and one exercise related to the elaboration of the results of one of the determinations seen during the laboratory practice. The first oral examination will concern two questions about all issues discussed during the lectures. The second oral examination will concern two questions related to the laboratory practice. The final mark of the course will be the average of the written text, the two oral examinations and the evaluation of the laboratory activities.
