Syllabus

Course Objectives

Knowledge of the physical, chemical, physiological and psychological fundamentals of human chromatic perception. Measurement of colour. Chemistry of dyes and pigments. Fundamentals of technological application of dyes and pigments.

Course Prerequisites

Fundamentals of mathematical analysis, physics, general, inorganic and organic chemistry are prerequisites to understand the course topics.

Teaching Methods

The course topics will be delivered through front lectures.

Assessment Methods

The final examination consissts of an interview on the topics covered by the front lections.

Ray optics: reflection and refraction. Wave aspects of light: electromagnetic waves, interference, diffraction, scattering. Absorption and emission of photons by matter. Light sources and illuminants. Radiometry. The eye and vision: Structure of the eye. Retina: structure and functioning. Day and night vision: rods and cones. Transmission of the signals to the brain. Colour vision and colour blindness. Photometry. Colorimetry: Tristimulus values. Illuminants. Colour spaces. CIE standard colorimetric system. CIE diagram. Metamerism. Measurement and calculation of colorimetric values. Uniform colour spaces. Empirical colour spaces. Instruments for colour measurement. Technological applications. Dyes: Chemical and coloristic classifications of dyes. Colour Index. Polyene and polymethine dyes. Di- and triarylmethine dyes and aza analogues. Aza[18]annulenes. Azo dyes. Carbonyl dyes. Sulphur dyes. Metal complex dyes. Direct dyes. Acid and basic dyes. Vat dyes. Disperse dyes. Reactive dyes. Technological applications of dyes: textiles, paper, other materials. Dyeing and printing.
