Syllabus

Course Objectives

The main objective of the course is to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge on topics related to the collection of clinical data for periodontal evaluation, primary and secondary prevention of caries and the ability to use camera for clinical documentation.

At the end of the lessons and workshops, the student should be able to know and then apply the following work methodologies:
1. Collect, analyze, archive and then compare data collected during clinical visits. This process will be through an in-depth knowledge of the oral manifestations affecting soft and hard mouth tissue by linking theoretical and clinical capabilities.
2. Know the physico-chemical characteristics of the sealing materials and the isolation of the operating field, the clinical use as a primary and secondary prevention of the cariosis pathology. At the end of the lessons, the student will have to know the operating methodologies in order to properly cure the patient.
3. Know how to use the photographic equipment for clinical documentation, didactic, medical and legal issues, treatment plans, and control of ongoing illnesses over time. The student will have to know software settings, camera’s hardware components to be able to perform correct clinical photographs.

Course Prerequisites

Anatomy-physiological knowledge of oral cavity and of dental elements is required.

Teaching Methods

Lectures for a total of 12 hours, during which clinical cases will be discussed. The theoretical part is combined with a practical part on sealing and isolating the surgical field, probing, and compiling periodontal records.

Assessment Methods

Oral exam. The student will have to demonstrate knowledge of the topics discussed and the ability to use correct terminology and mastering the language.

Contents

The following topics will be covered during the lessons:
• Clinical data collection, periodontal chart compilation, PSR, periodontal classification and operating instruments (4 hours)
• Caries classification, carious lesion detection, and identification of restorations and prosthetic devices (2 hours)
• Sealing of fissures, pits, and anatomical depressions, surgical field isolation methods (4 hours, including 2 hours of theory and 2 hours of practical work on a model)
• Clinical photography and clinical cases (2 hours)
