Course Objectives

The seminar course is designed to equip participants with essential tools for effectively interpreting, analyzing, and presenting data. Throughout the course, students will develop key skills to understand data structures, identify meaningful trends and relationships between variables, and clearly and coherently communicate their findings. The course takes a hands-on approach, enabling students to apply what they learn to real-world scenarios and to use statistical software for efficient data analysis. Additionally, it will provide tools and guidelines for data visualization, supporting clear and persuasive presentation of analytical results.

Assessment Methods

Attendance: Students are required to attend at least 75% of the sessions (at least three out of four lessons). Participation: Cameras must be kept on during the lessons to verify attendance. Final Assignment: Students must submit a short project applying the statistical and computational tools learned during the course. The assignment can be completed individually or in pairs.

Contents

The 16-hour course is divided into four sessions: Lesson 1: Introduction to Data Analysis, data structure (aggregated vs. disaggregated data), frequency tables, statistical distributions, graphical representations (pie charts, bar charts, histograms), and numerical data description. Lesson 2: Measures of central tendency (arithmetic mean, weighted mean, geometric mean, quadratic mean, median, quartiles, mode), measures of variability (range, interquartile range, variance, standard deviation, coefficient of variation), and concentration indices. Lesson 3: Brief overview of statistical sources and the development and interpretation of questionnaires. Lesson 4: Statistical data in Excel. Students will need their own laptops to apply key concepts from Lessons 1 and 2 using Excel’s main functions for data analysis.
