Course Objectives


This course has the purpose to provide students with the necessary skills to successfully read and translate scientific texts and articles in English . Medical/dental jargon is an important part of language learning since it allows students and future dentists to read professional literature, surf the Internet for information and research and communicate with their colleagues all over the world.

Course Prerequisites


CEFR B2 Level

Teaching Methods


A)Students must sit for a Placement Test to determine their current skill level in English. If B2 CEFR level is not achieved a compulsory training course on the MEC-Mc Millan Online Campus platform is required under the guidance of a tutor, who will also track the student's progress (a score of 75% correct exercises is necessary to take the final exam of Scientific English).
B)All students will follow a course of General English with a CEL language instructor.
C)Scientific English lectures (32 hours) will be given by the teacher on site.

Assessment Methods


The final examination is written.
It consists of 40 questions (multiple choice) related to the righjt use of dental vocabulary.
The grading system is based on a 30-point scale.

Contents


Psychological approach in the dental patient care (motivation, communication).
Primary,secondary and tertiary preventive dentistry.
The tooth and periodontium anatomy and development.
Dentition.
The dental office: dental staff and equipment.
Oral assessment: the patient's medical history, physical evaluation of teeth and gums.
Malocclusions: classification, etiology and orthodontic appliances (fixed, removable).
Impression trays, models, materials.
Veneers, dental crowns, inlays/onlays, partial fixed/removable dentures, full dentures.
Etiology, symptoms and care of the most common dental and oral diseases (tooth decay,gingivitis, periodontitis, pulpitis).
Dental emergencies:fractured and avulsed teeth, mandibular dislocation, postextraction problems, toothache,
infection.
Edentulism, problems of residual ridges.
Dental implant surgery.
Dental care for adults/children with special needs.
Dental care for for cancer patients.
The scientific article IMRAD structure.
