The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantion (ISHLT) Guidelines for the Care of Heart Transplant Recipients were originally published in 2010.635 These guidelines provided the first comprehensive guideline for the care of Heart Transplant patients. A great deal has changed in the years after this initial unprecedented document. The ISHLT has made the commitment to convene experts in all areas of heart transplantation to develop a focused update to the original practice guidelines. Writers
and Chairs were charged with reviewing the existing guidelines and where signifigant new literature exists, updating those original recommendations. Additionally, they were charged to add specific new areas of focus that were undeveloped, undiscovered, or unsupported at the time of the original publication. After a vast effort involving 39 writers from 11 countries worldwide, the “ISHLT Guidelines for the Care of Heart Transplant Recipients” has been completed and the Executive Summary of these guidelines is the subject of this article.
