Le chiese di Sigirino. Pittura, scultura e arredi liturgici dal Cinquecento al Rococò

Chapter
Publication Date:
2024
abstract:
The parish church of Sant’Andrea and the two orato-
ries of San Rocco and San Giovanni Battista contain
important works that are an expression of figurative
culture from Mannerism to the peak of the 18th cen-
tury. These also testify the direct involvement of sev-
eral members of the families of Sigirino or those from
nearby localities as authors of the works or as patrons,
as in the case of the Vocation of Saint Andrew, executed
in 1577 by a member of the Insermini dynasty of Mu-
gena, and the stuccoes executed by Pietro Marieloni
(Marielloni) in 1727; but members of the Pedretti and
Ghezzi families were also active in the three churches.
The processional statue of Our Lady of Sorrows and the
paintings in the church of San Rocco also can be dated
to the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century,
including a half-length Saint Charles, based on models
by Giovanni Battista Crespi known as Cerano. Final-
ly, in San Giovanni Battista, the altarpiece above the
main altar is noteworthy for the elegant classicism of a
composition of Emilian derivation.
