Overview
Dr. Marco Ferrari is a pharmacologist and researcher at the University of Insubria, where he serves as Head of the Pharmacogenetics Unit within the Center for Research in Medical Pharmacology. His academic and scientific career has focused on the integration of experimental pharmacology, clinical pharmacology, and pharmacogenetics, with the aim of improving the understanding of interindividual variability in drug response and advancing personalized medicine.
His research activity initially addressed neuropharmacology and neuroimmune interactions, investigating the role of catecholamines and dopaminergic pathways in immune regulation and neurodegenerative disorders. Over time, his interests progressively expanded toward pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics, with particular attention to the influence of genetic polymorphisms on drug efficacy, safety, and tolerability in neurological, psychiatric, and cardiovascular diseases.
Throughout his career, Dr. Ferrari has participated to numerous research projects funded by national and international agencies, including the Italian Ministry of University and Research, Fondazione Cariplo, the Italian Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (USA). His work has contributed to the development of translational approaches aimed at applying pharmacogenetic knowledge to clinical decision-making.
He has established long-standing collaborations with leading academic and clinical institutions in Italy, Switzerland and Spain, and has held appointments as Visiting Scientist and Visiting Professor at internationally recognized centers specializing in pharmacogenetics, neuroscience, and clinical psychopharmacology.
In addition to his research activities, Dr. Ferrari has been extensively involved in academic teaching and postgraduate education for over twenty-five years. He teaches pharmacology in undergraduate medical and health-professions programs, contributes to specialist training schools, and serves as supervisor and faculty member within doctoral programs. He has mentored numerous undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students, promoting the integration of basic and clinical research.
His institutional contributions include service on university committees, research center scientific boards, and hospital drug commissions. He is an active member of national and international scientific societies and regularly serves as reviewer for peer-reviewed journals in the fields of pharmacology, pharmacogenetics, neuroscience, and clinical medicine.
