Overview
Prof. Giulio Carcano is Full Professor of General Surgery at the University of Insubria, with extensive clinical and academic expertise in oncologic surgery, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, transplantation, and minimally invasive techniques. His research activity focuses on technological innovation in surgery, with particular emphasis on the development and optimization of advanced techniques for the treatment of neoplastic diseases and the improvement of outcomes in complex patients.
His scientific work addresses the key pathophysiological and clinical mechanisms involved in disease progression and organ injury, with a specific focus on ischemia–reperfusion injury in kidney transplantation, strategies for the use of marginal donors, and the implementation of advanced intraoperative technologies, including imaging systems and decision-support tools.
Current research interests are centered on multidisciplinary and translational approaches, integrating surgery, molecular biology, and innovative technologies to enhance treatment personalization and therapeutic effectiveness, particularly in liver and pancreatic surgery, oncologic surgery, and transplantation medicine.
He is the author of more than 280 peer-reviewed international publications, as well as books and book chapters, and actively participates in national and multicenter research projects. He collaborates with national and international research groups and is regularly involved in scientific and congress activities as an invited speaker.
His profile is characterized by a strong integration of clinical practice, translational research, and technological innovation, with the aim of contributing to the development of increasingly effective, safe, and personalized surgical models.
Description

He graduated with honors in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Pavia and completed his training in General and Vascular Surgery, early establishing a strong academic and clinical career.
His academic trajectory progressed through increasing responsibilities, leading to his appointment as Full Professor in 2009. Over the years, he has held several key institutional roles, including President of the School of Medicine (2015–2021), Director of the Residency Program in General Surgery, and Director of the Department of Medicine and Technological Innovation (DIMIT), contributing significantly to the development of medical education and academic governance.
His clinical and surgical activity is extensive, with more than 5,000 procedures performed, over 2,500 as primary surgeon, encompassing gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary and pancreatic, thoracic, vascular, and transplant surgery. He has developed particular expertise in the management of complex patients, emergency surgery, and kidney transplantation programs.
He is the author of over 280 scientific publications, 3 monographs, and 42 book chapters, and has participated in numerous national research projects and multicenter studies. He is actively involved in teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programs, playing a key role in the training of students and young surgeons. He is a member of national and international scientific societies and regularly participates in conferences as an invited speaker.
