GROSSI PAOLO ANTONIO

Paolo Grossi was born in Bergamo (Italy) on June 12, 1956. He is Professor of Infectious Diseases at the University of Insubria in Varese, Italy. He got his medical degree at the University of Milano (Italy). He attended the residency program on Infectious Diseases at the University of Pavia (Italy) where he got the post-doctoral degree on Preventive and Community Medicine. Since the beginning of his career he performed his clinical and research activity at the Infectious Diseases Department of the University of Pavia. In 1993 he moved, as visiting professor, to the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he remained to the end of 1994. Since the year 2000 he is professor of Infectious Diseases and director of the residency programs in Infectious Diseases and in Hygiene and Preventive Medicine at the University of Insubria, Varese, Italy. From February 2001 he is the Director of the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Unit of the ASST-Sette Laghi of Varese, Italy, where, starting from April 2009 to December 2019 he was the Director of the Department of Transplantation. Since September 2022 he is the director of the Department of research and clinical aspects of infectious diseases. The main research interest is in the field of infectious complications in transplant recipients and he participated to many research project in this area. He was involved, since its beginning, in the clinical program of heart and lung transplantation, started in Italy in November 1985, with the position of consultant in infectious diseases. His research programs are on epidemiology, clinical presentation, natural history, immunological basis and treatment strategies of infections following solid organ transplantation. Furthermore, starting from 1999 he is the advisor for all infectious diseases related problems at the Italian National Centre for Transplantation in Italy and covers the role of “second opinion” for all organ donors with potentially transmissible infectious diseases. Since 2001 he is a member of the Steering Committee of the program of Liver, kidney, kidney-pancreas, Lung and Heart transplantation in HIV+ individuals in Italy. He was also involved in many research programs on epidemiology, cost evaluation and experimental use of new anti-retroviral drugs for HIV infected individuals. Since the beginning of his career he was involved in diagnosis and treatment of infectious complications of haematological patients, particularly adult and pediatric HSCT recipients.
In 2005 he joined, within a research agreement with the University of Insubria, the ISMETT/UPMC, Italy in Palermo. Ongoing research programs are focused on the incidence of infectious complications following living related liver transplantation, the rationale use of antimicrobials, the implementation of Hand hygiene program, the evaluation of the DNAemia based pre-emptive therapy for CMV and EBV, the study of HHV-8 related diseases in transplant recipients and other activities related to infection control issues in the transplant setting. Starting from January 2012 he is the co-chair of the Infection Control Committee of the ISMETT.
In July 2013 he was nominated member of the WHO International Health Regulations Roster of Experts, as an expert in Essential health technologies (Transplantation services). Since May 2022 he has been nominated by the Italian Ministry of Health National Focal Point for SOHO – Human Organs at ECDC for Italy and in November 2023 he was elected as chair of the Substances of Human Origin Network Coordinating Committee (NCC). In April 2013 he was elected co-Chair of the ID Council of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation. From 2015 to 2017 he was the chair and from 2017 up to now is the past chair of the ID council of ISHLT. From 2019 to 2023 was the chair of the executive committee of the ESCMID study group on infection in immunocompromised host (ESGICH)and is currently the chair of the ID task force of the European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT). From March 2022 to May 2025 he has been a member of the Consiglio Superiore di Sanità (Superior Council of Health) of the Italian Ministry of Health.
In November 2022 he was nominated Italian National Focal Point for SoHO at ECDC and in April 2023 has been elected chair of the SoHO-Net Coordinating Committee for Human Organs.
He is author or co-author of more than 300 publications in the field of infectious disease in immunocompromised patients. Finally he was responsible of the chapter on the risk of transmission of Infectious Diseases of the Guide on Quality and Safety of Organs for Transplantation of the Council of Europe (5th, 6th, 7th edition, 8th edition, 9th edition and the ongoing 10th edition).
He is reviewer for the following journals: “Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation”, American Journal of Transplantation, Liver Transplantation, Transplantation, Clinical Transplantation, Transplant International, Transplant Infectious Diseases, Journal of Nephrology, Lancet Infectious Diseases, Lancet Microbe, Clinical Infectious Diseases, Plos One,Haematologica, Annals of Medicine, New Microbiologica and others.
