Description

Piero Antonio Zecca is a tenured-track researcher (RTT) in Human Anatomy (BIO/16) at the Department of Medicine and Innovative Technology (DIMIT), University of Insubria, holding the Italian National Scientific Qualification for Associate Professor (ASN, sector 05/H1). He holds a degree in Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics (2008), a Specialisation in Orthodontics and Masticatory Function (2014), and a PhD in Biotechnology, Biosciences and Surgical Techniques (2017), with research periods at the University of Michigan (USA) and University of Alberta (Canada). He co-directed the world’s first Master’s programme in Digital Dentistry at the University of Insubria for over 10 years. He lectures in Human Anatomy across degree programmes in Dentistry, Midwifery and Nursing. Author of over 68 Scopus-indexed publications, with more than 1,400 international citations and an h-index of 19 (Google Scholar). Current research focuses on microplastic release from orthodontic devices and on the application of artificial intelligence to cephalometric analysis. Clinically specialised in orthodontics and attachmentless lingual orthodontics (IMPACT technique, 200+ documented cases). Editorial board member of Dentistry Journal and Micromachines. Member of SIDO, SIAO, Digital Dentistry Society and Royal Microscopy Society.

Development and validation of predictive models based on morphometric measurements and routine anatomical parameters, with applications in biological age estimation, growth assessment and morphological classification. Special emphasis is placed on explainable and uncertainty-aware machine learning approaches to ensure transparency, robustness and reproducibility.
Investigation of craniofacial morphology and skeletal growth processes through quantitative approaches and three-dimensional morphometric analysis, using advanced imaging, digital segmentation, geometric registration and 3D modelling. Research focuses on anatomical variability and structure–function relationships within the craniofacial district, with applications in diagnostics, anthropometry and medico-legal assessment.
Investigation of micro- and nanoplastics released from polymer-based biomaterials and devices in in vitro and ex vivo experimental models, assessing their interactions with cells and tissues. Analytical methods include scanning and transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, advanced imaging, immunohistochemistry and molecular biology.
Study of healing and regenerative processes in mineralized tissues of the craniofacial district, including histological and ultrastructural assessment of biological grafts and biomaterials. Research involves optical and electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, molecular biology and 3D digital modelling for anatomical and functional characterization.
Study of the chemical, mechanical and microstructural properties of polymeric materials used in biomedical contexts, with particular focus on degradation and fragmentation processes under simulated physiological conditions. Investigations include FTIR spectroscopy, optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and multi-scale analytical techniques
