Overview
Gilda Ripamonti, a tenured researcher in Criminal Law and assistant professor of Advanced Criminal Law at the University of Insubria, was born in Como on June 27, 1967; She earned her law degree from the University of Milan with a thesis developed during research periods at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., and went on to earn her Ph.D. in Italian and Comparative Criminal Law from the University of Pavia. She was awarded a Fulbright scholarship and admitted, with a scholarship, to a master’s program at Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which she had to forgo due to serious family circumstances. Since 2002, she has been an Assistant professor of Criminal Law at the University of Insubria in Como. A mother of three, her academic research, mainly focused on boundaries to the use of force and Defenses and Excuses, also takes into account issues related to the protection of children and adolescents, as well as education. She served on the editorial board of the “Juvenile Criminal Justice” section of the journal *Cassazione penale*, and since 2015 has coordinated the organization of multidisciplinary university courses on development education in collaboration with UNICEF Italy. She has served on the Board of Trustees of the University of Insubria and on the Executive Committee of the Department of Law, Economics, and Culture; she has carried out ongoing institutional activities at her home university. Since May 2025, she has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Provincial Foundation. Since January 2026, she has served as the Ombudsman for the Rights of Persons Deprived of Their Personal Liberty for the City of Como.
As a member of the Scientific Council of the University’s Center for Research and Studies on Law, Media, Information, and Society, she has conducted research on the topic of personal data protection and served as a key staff member of the Jean Monnet teaching module “Personal Data Protection as a Fundamental Right in the EU and the Digital Age.” She conducts research on preventing and combating violence against women; she contributed to the drafting of an agreement to establish a legal aid office at the Como Correctional Facility. She was a member of the Animal Protection and Welfare Committee.
As member of the scientific council of the Center for Studies on Restorative Justice and Mediation (CeSGReM) at the University of Insubria, she focuses research on crime victims and pathways to restorative justice and humanistic mediation. Since 2024, she has served on the scientific board of the journal “Cura e Giustizia,” which explores the relationship between the dimensions of justice and those of care from an interdisciplinary perspective.
As the president and organizer of an international early music festival for several years, she is interested in the relationship between art and law, particularly in the context of developing rehabilitation programs for convicted offenders through transformative cultural expressions and in the dynamics between perpetrators and victims of crime; since 2022, she has participated at meetings of an international group of scholars focused on music in prisons, the International Music and Justice Inquiry Network.

PERSONAL INTERESTS
Voluntary activities in non profit associations with a main focus on Music. As Chairman and Artistic Director of the association called Accademia dei Piaceri campestri, I organise an International Ancient Music Season in Varese. As member of the Board of Directors of the Associazione Margherita Ripamonti I coordinate projects related to the restauration and maintenance of some italian architectural premises and cultural assets.
