PARTICIPATION TO RESEARCH GROUPS AND PROJECTS
2011-Current: Environmental Modeling Group: Elisa Terzaghi is part of the Environmental Modeling Group (EMG) directed by Prof. Antonio di Guardo at the Department of Science and High Technology of the University of Insubria. EMG deals with risk assessment for ecosystems through the development of predictive models of the environmental fate of organic contaminants. The EMG is characterized by several collaborations both nationally and internationally.
2025-Current: Project BENEATH THE WINES
2022- Current: Project NODES (Nord-Ovest Digitale E Sostenibile). I am involved in the SPOKE 2 “Green
technologies and sustainable industry” and more specifically in the flagship project GRIP “Green processes for Industrial productions and Cost-Effective Effluents Valorization” (3 months/person). This project aims to implement and apply circular economy principles to both upstream and downstream processes to achieve sustainable industrial production processes. GRIP is structured in 8 different Research Modules (RMs). I’m involved in RM3 “Chemical industry and collection waste processing platform”. My role includes environmental risk assessment for aquatic ecosystems for textile chemicals (including PFAS), through analysis of environmental samples and the use of environmental fate models and ecotoxicity data.
2023-Current: Project LIFE22-ENV-ITLIFE-CASCADE: Closed-loop wAter Systems in textile industrial distriCts: multimodal orchestrAteD rEmoval of emerging pollutants from textile wastewater. The LIFE CASCADE project aims to develop and evaluate a series of treatment technologies to remove PFAS and microplastics from wastewater derived from the textile industry. It is structured in 6 Work Packages (WPs). I am involved in WP2 “Set up and validation of analytical methods” where I am responsible for developing method for PFAS determination in water and wastewater by Liquid Chromatography High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (LC-HRMS); I’m also involved in WP4 “Monitoring the project impacts”, which includes the exposure and effect assessment of textile chemicals (microplastics and PFAS) on aquatic ecosystems through the analysis of environmental samples, mesocosm experiments with macroinvertebrates and the use of environmental fate models (2 months/person).
2014-2018: Project SIN Brescia-Caffaro: Elisa Terzaghi participated in the SIN Brescia-Caffaro research project (University of Insubria and University of Milan) coordinated by Prof. Di Guardo (DISAT, University of Insubria) together with the group of Prof. Borin (DEFENS, University degli Studi di Milano) and Prof. Raspa (Sapienza University of Rome) for the experimentation of biological techniques for the reclamation of the agricultural areas of the Site of National Interest (SIN-Brescia Caffaro) (research contract funded by ERSAF Lombardia, ERSAF Decree no. III / 5426 of 09.12.2013). Her main role: participation in the experimental and modeling activity with the modification of the SoilPlusVeg model for the prediction of rhizoremediation.
2013-2016: Project LRI-CEFIC “ChimERA: An integrated modelling tool for ecological risk assessment”. Elisa Terzaghi participated in the LRI-CEFIC research project "ChimERA: An integrated modeling tool for ecological risk assessment", (www.cefic-lri.org; project code: LRI-ECO19) on the integration of dynamic models of environmental fate and models for the prediction of the effects on ecosystems. The project involved Prof. Di Guardo (project manager for the University of Insubria), Prof. Frederik De Laender of Ghent University (Belgium) and Prof. Paul Van den Brink of Wageningen University (The Netherlands). Her main role: responsible for the bioaccumulation experiments of organic contaminants in algae and macrophytes.
RESPONSIBLE FOR SCIENTIFIC STUDIES AND RESEARCH
2019-2020: Head of Senior Research Grant (ERC LS Life Sciences Sector) obtained through a competitive procedure (first classified) at the University of Insubria. The project proposal was evaluated by 3 external reviewers of the MIUR database. Project title: Tuning the role of forest ecosystem services in improving air quality: calibrating key parameters in SoilPlusVeg model.
2020: Head of the project "Role of forest ecosystem services in improving air quality: the contribution of phyllosphere bacteria to PAH air concentration reduction" funded by the Francesca and Luigi Brusarosco Award 2019.
