Description
Francesco Ginelli is Associate Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Insubria. He graduated in Physics from the University of Milan in 1998 and obtained his PhD in Physics from the University of Florence in 2002. He carried out research at the National Institute of Optics, the University of Würzburg, the Centre d’Études de Saclay, the Institut des Systèmes Complexes in Paris, the Italian National Research Council, and the University of Aberdeen, where he held the positions of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Reader. Since 2019, he has been Associate Professor at the University of Insubria.
His research focuses on statistical physics, nonlinear dynamics, and complex systems, with particular emphasis on active matter, flocking, collective animal behaviour, nonequilibrium phase transitions, chaos theory, covariant Lyapunov vectors, and the statistical physics of deep learning. He has contributed to the study of confinement and external perturbations in active systems and to the quantitative analysis of bird flocks and sheep herds.
He is the author of approximately 60 publications, with around 6,500 citations and an h-index of 33 according to Google Scholar. His most representative works include articles published in Nature Machine Intelligence, Nature Physics, PNAS, Physical Review Letters, and Journal of Physics A.
He has coordinated several competitive national and international research projects, including an EPSRC First Grant, a Marie Curie Career Integration Grant, a Marie Curie European Joint Doctorate, and a PRIN 2020 project. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of Statistical Physics and Director of the international doctoral school “Statistical Physics of Deep Learning”, held every two years at the Lake Como School of Advanced Studies.

Overview (2)
Statistical Physics of Active Matter:
This research line focuses on the study of emergent properties in active matter systems, with particular emphasis on systems characterized by spontaneous symmetry breaking, such as flocking. Special attention is devoted to the effects of geometric confinement and external perturbations on the spatial organization and dynamics of the system.
Statistical Physics of Deep Learning:
This research line is devoted to the study and interpretability of artificial intelligence systems, particularly deep neural networks, through the use of tools and methods from statistical mechanics, the theory of disordered systems, and nonequilibrium dynamics. Machine learning is analyzed as an emergent collective process in extremely high-dimensional parameter spaces, with the aim of characterizing its structural and dynamical properties and clarifying the mechanisms underlying its generalization capabilities.
