Structure of the extracellular matrix

Group
The research activity is mainly focused on the structural biology of connective tissues. In particular: - ultrastructure of fibrillar collagens (types I, II, III, V and XI) and proteoglycans in different tissues and related biomechanical correlations, with particular regard to tensile tissues (tendons, fascia, meninges); - structure and metabolism of bone tissue (modalities of remodeling and re-vascularization of compact bone; - ultrastructure of the osteon; diagenetic phenomena of post-mortem bone); - ultrastructural details of the enchondral ossification and of the chondrocyte-osteocyte transition; - morphology and metabolism of adipose tissue in the various anatomical sites; - implant biomaterials for orthopedics and dentistry and their integration mechanisms with the different connective tissues.
