Human Morphology

Group
The research activity of the Human Morphology group at the University of Insubria focuses on the study of tissue structure at the morphological, ultrastructural, and molecular levels, with the aim of developing and supporting clinical applications. The research adopts an integrated approach combining light and electron microscopy, advanced imaging, immunohistochemistry, molecular biology techniques, and 3D printing to analyze various tissue types, with particular attention to mineralized connective tissues, adipose tissue, and the extracellular matrix. Special emphasis is placed on the study of collagen and its role in tissue structural biology, remodeling and mineralization processes, as well as degenerative mechanisms. A clinically relevant research line concerns micro- and nanoplastics released by dental aligners, investigated using in vivo and ex vivo experimental models to assess their impact on cells and tissues.

Overview

Research line on collagen, hard tissues and mineralization Study of the organization of collagen fibers, the extracellular matrix and the processes of mineralization using optical and electron microscopy (transmission and scanning), atomic force microscopy, advanced imaging techniques, immunohistochemistry, molecular biology, scanning and 3D printing. Study of the organization and morphometry of tendinous and ligamentous collagen fibers to detect potential fragility and assess their possible use for surgical replacement of injured ligaments. Research line on adipose tissue Study of the different compartments of facial adipose tissue from structural and ultrastructural perspectives to describe their organization and age-related changes. Study of the different compartments of visceral adipose tissue to highlight ultrastructural differences in adipocyte organization and in the extracellular matrix component. Investigations are carried out using optical and electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry and molecular biology. Research line on micro- and nanoplastics Study of micro- and nanoplastics released from dental materials in in vivo and ex vivo experimental models to evaluate their impact on cells and tissues, using optical and electron microscopy (transmission and scanning), atomic force microscopy, advanced imaging techniques, immunohistochemistry and molecular biology. All members of the Human Morphology Laboratory research team actively contribute to the implementation and progress of the various research lines.
