Obiettivi Formativi

In the first part of the course, students will learn about the biology of embryonic and adult stem cells, including their capacity for self-renewal and generation of multiple mature cell types, as well as their therapeutic potential. There will be a specific section dedicated to in vitro fertilisation. Students will also learn how to evaluate the biological impact of gene editing, embryonic and induced stem cells, and in vitro fertilisation techniques. The second part of the course aims to introduce students to the theory behind advanced methods used to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms of cell function and human diseases. The second part of the course introduces the biology of stem cells and their use in studying and treating diseases. Through lectures, students will investigate how recent advanced techniques have improved our understanding of the main pathways related to cancer and neurodegenerative disease biology. A section of the course will focus on the theoretical aspects of using these techniques for preventive medicine, particularly in the context of environmental molecular epidemiology. The course will also provide students with the opportunity to develop communication skills by working in a team environment and interacting effectively with peers and academic staff. By the end of the course, students will be familiar with a variety of biomedical techniques, understand the theory behind them, and know how to apply them during experimental planning. They will also learn about the relevance of stem cell biology and its applications in medicine.

Prerequisiti

In order to follow the course, an adequate knowledge of cell and molecular biology, biochemistry and physiology is required.

Metodi didattici

The course topics will be covered through lecture-style instruction, using electronic presentations and computers for basic bioinformatics. Each lesson will be divided into two or three 50-minute sections, with one or two 10-minute breaks, and a final 10-minute discussion with students about the topics covered. The total duration of each lesson will be two or three hours. Working groups will be organised to address specific issues related to the course topics. By the end of the course, students will have a solid understanding of the theory behind recent advanced investigative methods in cellular and molecular biology, as well as stem cell research. They will also demonstrate skills in information retrieval and basic bioinformatics, and will have developed an approach to learning these scientific topics independently.

Verifica Apprendimento

Oral exams. For the exam, the student will prepare a presentation on one of the topics discussed during the course. The students will be provided with a list of specific topics, among which they will chose one for the preparation of a presentation. Updated reviews and research articles for the presentation will be provided on each topic. The students will need to further search on PubMed for additional research articles on the topic of interest to personalise their presentation. The students need to demonstrate: • sufficient knowledge of the specific topic presented • the ability to discuss cutting edge molecular techniques • the correct use of scientific terms • to be able to make connections between the topics covered during the • course and those not included in the presentation During the discussion, the students will also be evaluated for their knowledge on all the topics covered during the course, and get a score of at least 18/30

Contenuti

In the first part of the course, students will learn how to discuss the biology of embryonic and adult stem cells, their capacity for self-renewal and generation of multiple mature cell types, and their therapeutic potential, through lectures. A second section will focus specifically on in vitro fertilisation. In the second part, students will learn how recent advanced techniques have improved our understanding of the main pathways related to cancer and neurodegenerative disease biology. The course will also cover the theoretical aspects of using these techniques for preventive medicine, with a particular focus on environmental molecular epidemiology. A specific section will focus on vaccination as an important method of preventing communicable and non-communicable diseases.
