Syllabus

Obiettivi Formativi

The course aims to provide students with an understanding of the biological and molecular basis of stem cells and their derivatives, and to explore their role in the study and treatment of human diseases. Emphasis will be placed on the development and application of advanced cell-based technologies in regenerative medicine, including biocompatible three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds combined with stem cells and their derivatives.
The course will also introduce the principles of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) for working in clean-room environments, as well as the ethical aspects related to the use of stem cells in biomedical research and clinical applications.
In addition to subject-specific knowledge, the course is designed to foster the development of transferable skills by encouraging students to:
1. Take responsibility for their own learning and develop independent study skills.
2. Integrate lecture material through the critical use of scientific literature and other academic resources.
3. Work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, particularly during laboratory activities.
4. Strengthen their communication skills through scientific discussions and oral presentations.

Prerequisiti

Students are expected to have a basic background in cell biology, molecular biol-ogy, biochemistry, and human physiology.

Metodi didattici

The course combines lectures with hands-on laboratory activities. Lectures pro-vide the theoretical background, while laboratory sessions allow students to ap-ply the acquired knowledge through practical experience. The laboratory compo-nent is designed to promote independent learning, teamwork, critical thinking, and compliance with laboratory safety and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) guide-lines.

Verifica Apprendimento

The final assessment consists of an individual seminar-style oral presentation based on one of the course topics (PowerPoint presentation recommended).
Students are expected to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the scientific concepts presented throughout the course and the ability to critically discuss current biomedical applications.
The oral presentation will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
• quality and effectiveness of the slides;
• scientific accuracy, content organization and clarity of the presentation;
• ability to answer questions and engage in scientific discussion;
• compliance with the allotted presentation time.

The final grade will be calculated as the weighted mean of the marks obtained in the two modules of the Integrated Course:
Module I – Advanced Biomedical Techniques (First Semester)
Module II – Stem Cells (Second Semester)

The course is successfully completed if the final grade is 18/30 or higher.
