Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (02/03/2026 - 05/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The main objective is to reach an appropriate knowledge of hematological malignancies and diseases. Students will be asked to know and to discuss on pathogenesis of hematological diseases, how to reach a final diagnosis, which is the clinical phenotype of patients and which are the most used and updated prognostic systems to predict events.
The student will be able to discern among conditions affecting blood cells, discussing diagnoses and prognostication systems. This will allow to know where oncologic medicine is going

Course Prerequisites

It is of main relevance that students know physiology of hematopoiesis and in general genetics and molecular biology related to oncogenesis.

Teaching Methods

Teaching will be based on frontal lessons, and discussion of e-cases using e-learning system

Contents

Lessons will focus on:
1. Hematopoiesis:
Hematopoiesis will be displayed with all physiologic aspects of maturation and proliferation. Morphology of cells will be presented as well as the indication for the procedure of bone marrow biopsy.
2. Anemias
Role and function of red cells and of hemoglobin will be presented; clinical and laboratoristic strategies to diagnose anemias, classification and algorithms of anemias, etiology, incidence, pathophysiology, clinic phenotype, diagnosis of anemias will be disclosed.
3. Bleeding disorders
Role and function of platelets will be presented; clinical and laboratoristic strategies to diagnose thrombocytopenias, platelet dysfunction, and coagulation disorders (congenital and acquired) will be displayed; classification, etiology, incidence, pathophysiology, clinic phenotype, diagnosis of bleeding disorders will be disclosed.
4. Myeloid neoplasms
Role and function of leukocytes will be presented; 2016 WHO classification of myeloid neoplasms will be discussed; clinical and laboratoristic strategies to diagnose myeloid neoplasms will be displayed; etiology, incidence, molecular pathophysiology, clinic phenotype, diagnosis of myeloid neoplasms will be disclosed.
5. Lymphoid neoplasms
Role and function of lymphocytes will be presented; 2016 WHO classification of lymphoid neoplasms will be discussed; clinical and lab strategies to diagnose lymphoid neoplasms will be displayed; etiology, incidence, molecular pathophysiology, clinic phenotype, diagnosis of lymphoid neoplasms will be disclosed.
6. Plasma cell disorders
Clinical and lab strategies to diagnose monoclonal gammopathy will be presented; diagnosis, etiology, incidence, pathophysiology, clinic phenotype, diagnosis of monoclonal gammopaties will be shown.
