The "Computer Science Applied to Research" course is designed to provide students with essential skills in the use of computer tools for the organisation, analysis, and interpretation of research data. The main objective is to develop the ability to apply descriptive and inferential statistics techniques using software such as Excel and open-source statistical analysis software. Expected learning outcomes Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
Organise, collect, and clean data using Excel, preparing them for statistical analysis. Apply the descriptive statistics functions of statistical software to calculate frequency distributions, measures of position and dispersion, and to analyse the correlation between variables. Create and interpret graphs to visualise data effectively. Use statistical software to perform parametric and non-parametric statistical tests, understanding the use of tests to compare distributions of continuous or discrete data, both paired and independent.
Teaching Methods
The lectures take place in the computer laboratory; each one includes both a frontal teaching component and practical exercises using the students' own data or data provided by the instructor.
Contents
The lectures will cover the following topics: Organisation, collection, and cleaning of data in Excel. Use of statistical software (jamovi) functions to conduct descriptive statistical analyses: frequency distributions, measures of position and dispersion, correlation between two variables. Creation of graphs. Use of statistical software for hypothesis testing: parametric and non-parametric tests to compare two or more continuous or discrete distributions (paired data and independent samples). Calculation and interpretation of the p-value and the confidence interval for means/proportions.
