The objectives of the “immunopathology” course are to provide a) a comprehensive knowledge of T-cell biology and immunopathology b) a basic understanding of techniques used in immunology c) notions in some areas of current research c1) the microbiota and mucosal immunity c2) cancer immunology c3) neuroimmunology. Currently a knowledge of immunopathology is essential in the Biomedical field,an additional goal of the course is to provide notions that complement and supplement the Microbiology, Oncology and Neurobiology courses. After taking the course the student will be able to explain the concepts underlying immunology in the state of health and disease and also to describe some experimental approaches
Course Prerequisites
In order to attend the course with some profit, the student should be in possession of the basics in immunology. Therefore, the lecturer will give three lectures summarising basic immunology at the beginning of the course.
Teaching Methods
The course consists of lectures supported by Power Point presentations (48 hours, 6 CFU). As a supplement to Section B, the lecturer will briefly discuss some original articles (journal club).
Assessment Methods
The final exam consists of a written test: 1 “broad” open question on entire topics covered in the course + 1 ‘broad’ open question on experimental or technical topics + 3 “narrowed” open questions. Students are expected to have a comprehensive knowledge of current immunology and immunopathology, a basic understanding of some experimental methods, and to be able to summarize and discuss the original research articles presented in class. The final mark is graded as follows: 10 points for the first “broad” open question, 12 points for the second ‘broad’ open question, 3 points for each of the three “narrowed” open questions (the sum of these scores, 10+12+9 ,is 30+1, 30 cum laude).
