Syllabus
Obiettivi Formativi
The course aims to improve students’ knowledge and use of the conventions of academic English. It will cover some of the areas of scientific communication that students should master in order to successfully promote their research, including how to write cohesive and coherent sentences and paragraphs, how to paraphrase, how to read research papers and write abstracts. Students will get a chance to practice their writing and speaking skills, and improve their academic English vocabulary and grammar.
On completion of the course, students should be able to
1. Communicate in a clear, concise and correct manner.
2. Extract required information from spoken or written technology-related material, using skills in research, note-taking and summarization
3. Describe information (data, processes and phenomena) in a formal, objective manner.
4. Exchange technology-related information using language that is appropriate to the medium.
5. Develop communication skills relevant to technology-related employment including professional expression.

Prerequisiti
A B2 (CEFR_CV) level is required.
Metodi didattici
All lessons will focus on academic reading and writing skills through study and discussion of magazine, and journal articles of varying lengths related to important issues in computer technology. In class emphasis will be placed on
- developing a deep understanding of sentence and text structure,
- developing micro- and macro-reading skills, so that relevant information can be found quickly and effectively,
- individual and group work (peer editing).
When needed, lecturing will provide theoretical guidelines and principles as well as practical examples from scientific texts and exercises to teach students how to apply the guidelines to their own work.

Abstract (50%)
A research article is provided with no abstract. Students are asked to write the abstract.
Criteria for marking
a. Introduction: it succinctly describes and appropriately connects the subjet and context/background to the purpose of investigation;
b. Methods: the methods section succinctly identifies the methods used to study the study the subject of the investigation OR succinctly identifies the existing procedures, models or programs used.
c. Results: the results section provides a succinct and specific explanation of what was discovered, accomplished, collected or produced.
d. Conclusion:
- With results. The conclusion provides a succinct interpretation of the results and evaluates what the results meant to the investigation, OR evaluates the relevance or uniqueness of what was accomplished in the immediate context of the research or project’s purpose,
AND describes how the investigation fits within a larger field
- When results were not obtained. A conclusion without results succinctly evaluates what the completion of the investigation could mean within a larger field.
e. Language use and conventions: the abstract has complete sentences, appropriate word choices, correct grammar and usage, conventional spelling, capitalization and punctuation, and defines all acronyms.
For each of the five criteria the marking system goes from 2 to 0 points.
Reading and Listening (25%)
READING
A text dealing with topics which are related to technology is provided followed by 10 comprehension questions of two types:
- 7 questions are either multiple choice questions or true – false – not given questions (2 points for each correct question)
- 3 questions are open (2 points for each complete question)
LISTENING
The exam consists of an audio recording which will be played twice during the exam. A set of 10 close questions and / or short answer questions will follow (1,5 point for each correct question).
Language in use (25%)
From 10 to 15 sentences to be transformed are given (2 points for each correct sentence)
