Syllabus

Course Objectives

AIM OF THE COURSE The aim of the course is to provide the students with the following skills: a) Knowledge of the fundamental notions of three-dimensional solid mechanics: static, kinematics, constitutive bond. b) Knowledge of the principles and theorems of continuum mechanics. c) Application to beam systems (isostatic and hyperstatic) and flat (two-dimensional) systems. LEARNING OUCOMES • Cognitive skills - to acquire information related to the behavior of continuous solids - to govern the methods of structural analysis to obtain stresses and deformations of a structure formed by beams • Learning abilities - ability to read and understand a scientific text about the behaviour of continuous method • Practical and subject specific skills - ability to propose a problem-solving approach • Communication skills - ability to identify, extract and synthesize relevant information - demonstrate effective communication skills by practicing, reading, writing and speaking clearly

Course Prerequisites

Compliance with the prerequisites of the Mathematical Analysis B and Physics courses is required

Teaching Methods

The course is based on frontal theoretical lessons and development of classroom examples related to the theory The teacher receives weekly and by appointment for requests for clarification on the topics covered

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written test and an oral exam. The written test is divided into two parts: The first part consists of 1 exercise concerning isostatic structures and its duration is 105 minutes; The second part includes 1 or 2 exercises concerning the mechanics of the continuum and the problem of Saint venant and lasts 90 minutes.. The theoretical test, which is accessed if at least 16/30 is obtained in the written test, includes questions on all the topics covered in the course. Its duration is approximately 20 minutes and can improve or worsen the grade of the written test by a maximum of 5 points.

Contents

The main topics are: 1.-Kinematics and statics of isostatic beam systems (16 hours). 2.-Analysis of deformable beam systems (isostatic and hyperstatic): the elastic line and the principle of virtual works (14 hours). 3.-Stability of the equilibrium of compressed beams (8 hours). 4.-analysis of stress and strain in a continuous body (8 hours). 5.-Constitutive equations of continuous body (4 hours). 6.-The elastic-linear behaviour (4 hours). 7.-The resistance criteria (4 hours). 8.-The Saint Venant problem (14 hours)
