Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (23/02/2026 - 29/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

Air quality is a very important factor for the well-being of citizens and the protection of the external and indoor environment. The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge of the basic phenomenology of pollutant dispersion in the atmosphere, preventive techniques or solutions for the reduction of pollutant concentrations in gas/air flows discharged into the environment, principles of overall management of air quality, including indoor, with the integration of aspects such as those concerning the topic of odours and links with climate-altering emissions. EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course, the student will be able to: • select the reference regulations for case studies • define monitoring strategies for outdoor and indoor air and interpret the results of the analyses • identify preventive and purifying solutions (also integrated) for the management of emission sources • describe, design and verify some equipment suitable for the treatment of polluted gas/air flows that will then be emitted into the atmosphere (including odorous substances). • select appropriate mathematical models (point source) capable of providing a rough estimate (in terms of concentrations at the generic receptor) of the magnitude of any release into the atmosphere;

Course Prerequisites

The course requires knowledge of basic elements of chemistry

Teaching Methods

The course will be conducted entirely using lectures in which, in addition to the normal teaching activity, multimedia videos will be used to facilitate the learning of all the notions imparted. The lectures will also be used to explain methodologies for sizing devices and developing case studies.

Assessment Methods

The exam will consist of a quiz test plus a short oral test. The evaluation will consider specifically the knowledge acquired and the ability to rework, present, argue and summarize this knowledge.

Contents

The course contents are divided into three modules: outdoor environment (24 hours), indoor environment (8 hours) and other aspects (16 hours). External Environment: • Fundamental concepts and phenomenology, specific pollutants, emission factors + Illustration of the calculation of emission factors and comparisons • Effects on the environment and health, regulations + Illustration of the calculation of TEQ PCDD/F • Monitoring (emissions and immissions): sampling, analysis and interpretation + Illustration of the case of a steel mill. • Preventive solutions (for point and linear sources) and illustration of real examples • Purification solutions (for point and linear sources) and illustration of the calculation of filtration efficiency • Integrated approaches (Air Quality Plans) and illustration of the case of an Italian city Indoor Environment: • Specific pollutants, indoor emission factors, indoor monitoring + Particle counter analyzers. • Regulations (quality and health) and certifications + LEED certification. Other Aspects: • The role of air pollution in climate change + Comparative aspects of transport strategies. • Odours: definition, origin, management + Biofiltration sizing and comparison with RTO • Ultrafine particulate matter (definition, measurement methods, available data) + Comparison between real cases • Modelling aspects. Difference between continuous emissions and accidental events + Incinerator case study All the topics listed above have the same weight and, consequently, will have a comparable duration in terms of lesson hours (about 4 hours).
