Course Objectives

The aim of the course is to develop the skills necessary to make the best use of all manual and ultrasonic professional oral hygiene instruments, which are then used during clinical practice.
At the end of the course, students are expected to have developed the following skills:
- Greater manual dexterity in the use of ultrasonic instruments (ultrasonic scaler), manual instruments (probe, mirror, scaler) and powder-based instruments, air polishing (airflow), based on available scientific evidence and devices available to dental hygienists, which they will also use during their professional training.
- Have acquired the basics for using and maintaining correct ergonomic positions at the dental unit for the use of the above-mentioned instruments.
- Have acquired critical and problem-solving skills through the resolution of clinical cases and resolve any doubts by consulting with the teacher and colleagues.

Course Prerequisites

A prerequisite is that students admitted to the second year have adequate theoretical preparation derived from having attended the courses DENTAL HYGIENE SCIENCES 1, PROFESSIONAL LABORATORY 1, ODONTOSTOMATOLOGY and PROFESSIONAL TRAINING 1. Although there are no prerequisites, it is recommended that students pass the above-mentioned exams before starting the second year.

Teaching Methods

The educational objectives of the course will be achieved through five 4-hour lessons distributed as follows: technical-practical lessons on typodonts, mannequins and exercises guided by experienced tutors.
The most commonly used teaching method will be simulation, in which, through demonstrations by an expert tutor on typodonts and mannequins and video tutorials, students will have the opportunity to perform the same technique independently and/or in small groups of 3-4 people, which will be presented and reviewed together at a theoretical and practical level. one or more students are observed while performing a professional task in conditions similar to those in which they will have to perform them during their profession. Students will be able to follow and self-assess in order to improve through the use of specially designed checklists. (Zannini, 2015; Guilbert j., 2002).
Students will be asked to analyse and resolve clinical cases/problem-solving, which involves analysing complex situations, promoting learning on how to diagnose and intervene in situations similar to those presented in the case specially prepared by a tutor-teacher. (Zannini, 2015; Aif, professione formazione, 1995).
This method stimulates interaction between teacher and student and also allows for the development of interpersonal skills and skills useful for healthcare professionals working in teams. (Zannini, 2015; Calamandrei C. and Pennini A., 2006).

Assessment Methods

Learning assessment will be evaluated as suitability; students will be assessed using a checklist as suitable, improvable or unsuitable in demonstrating the acquisition of the theoretical knowledge and practical skills covered during the course.

Contents

The course consists of 20 hours, divided into 5 four-hour sessions organised as follows, during which practical exercises will be used to explore and improve management techniques:
• Periodontal probe;
• Scaler;
• Ultrasound;
• Scaler and ultrasonic review session;
• Polishing and air polishing (Airflow).
