Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course provides students with fundamental knowledge of the main diseases of the musculoskeletal system, with particular emphasis on clinical features, diagnostic-therapeutic pathways, and nursing care management.

The course aims to enable students to:
recognize the most relevant orthopaedic and traumatological conditions
understand diagnostic and therapeutic pathways
plan and manage nursing care for patients with musculoskeletal disorders
effectively collaborate within a multidisciplinary team

Knowledge and Understanding

At the end of the course, students will have acquired knowledge of:

anatomy and pathophysiology of the musculoskeletal system

main orthopaedic and traumatic conditions (fractures, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, inflammatory diseases)

basic clinical and instrumental diagnostic principles

principles of conservative and surgical treatment

Applying Knowledge and Understanding

Students will be able to:

identify signs and symptoms of major musculoskeletal diseases

apply appropriate nursing care procedures in orthopaedic patients

support patients throughout the peri-operative pathway

manage orthopaedic devices (casts, braces, immobilization systems, mobility aids)

Making Judgements

Students will develop the ability to:

assess nursing care needs of patients with musculoskeletal conditions

early identify complications (infections, thromboembolism, compartment syndrome)

adapt care plans according to clinical complexity

Communication Skills

Students will be able to:

communicate effectively with patients and caregivers

provide health education (mobilization, fall prevention, pain management)

interact appropriately within a multidisciplinary team

Learning Skills

Students will:

develop the ability for continuous professional updating in orthopaedic nursing care

use clinical guidelines and care protocols appropriately

apply evidence-based clinical reasoning
