The course aims to provide the students, with the help of front lessons and exercises, knowledge of the most common emergency situations that may threaten the survival of patients. The expected learning outcomes are: decision-making and care capabilities in the most common clinical situations of acute failure of organs and apparatus, and in particular in case of cardiac arrest, cardiovascular insufficiency, respiratory failure, shock, coma.
Course Prerequisites
- Pre-requisites are those provided by the course's degree program. In order to be able to take advantage of the course, the student should have a solid knowledge of physiopathology, clinic and diagnostics of major medical and surgical pathologies and adequate knowledge of the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the main emergency molecules.
Teaching Methods
The course consists of 18 frontal hours lessons with multimedia slides and media tools.
Assessment Methods
Testing is a written test with 15 multiple-choice questions for the Integrated Course.
Contents
1) Early warning signals, evaluation and treatment of the critical patient; 2) organization for emergency medical situations; 3) pathophysiology of respiratory and cardio-circulation failure; 4) Sudden Cardiac arrest and Basic Life Support with Early Defibrillation; 5) care in the treatment of cardiac arrest with Advanced Life Support, threatening arrhythmias, cardio-circulatory and respiratory failure; 6) shock; 7) principles of general anaesthesia and pain control; 8) Intensive Care Unit: admission and discharge criteria, ethical aspects; 9) application of Non Invasive Ventilation.
