Course Objectives

The course German Language II within the Degree Programme in Tourism Studies (levels A2–B2) is designed to strengthen students’ reading skills, listening comprehension, written production, and spoken interaction in the field of tourism. Students are expected to acquire and consolidate the linguistic, communicative, and intercultural competences necessary to operate effectively in this sector.

The primary educational objective is to enable students to manage everyday situations through the development of sector-specific language and the enhancement of communicative strategies aimed at facilitating interaction with foreign clientele. Particular attention will be devoted to the presentation of local accommodation facilities, the artistic, cultural, environmental, and gastronomic heritage of the region, as well as its socio-economic and historical-cultural profiles. The course will also address emerging trends in tourism, including reflections on sustainability, social responsibility, and the use of Artificial Intelligence tools in the tourism industry.

Significant emphasis will be placed on reading, listening, and comprehension activities in German in order to foster conversational skills through the simulation of frequent real-life situations. This approach is intended to improve oral production by ensuring accurate vocabulary usage and precise pronunciation.

By the end of the course, students will be able to understand phrases and expressions typical of the tourism sector; read and comprehend written communications related to tourism contexts; and interact orally with coherent expressive ability on tourism-related and economic topics (such as obtaining and providing information at reception desks, in catering or business contexts, engaging in small talk, responding to requests, and offering assistance and support). Furthermore, students will enhance their linguistic skills in order to increase the level of customer satisfaction within tourism establishments and to manage reviews and online resources so as to improve the visibility of the relevant tourism enterprise.

Course Prerequisites

The course requires, as a prerequisite, the full attainment of level A1 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Upon entry, students must be able to understand the essential elements of basic communications in the German language, produce simple and coherent texts on everyday topics and situations, describe experiences, events, and wishes, formulate requests, and provide simple explanations and indications regarding their own ideas and opinions.

Teaching Methods

The course is delivered during the second semester and consists of face-to-face lectures. It includes analysis and practical exercises focusing on German vocabulary, grammar, and phonetics; listening activities of a general nature or specifically related to the tourism sector; reading comprehension exercises employing sector-specific terminology; open dialogues and role-playing activities; the production of brief written reports or conversations; and the consultation of web corpora and online resources useful for terminological purposes or for further subject-specific study.

Summary handouts and course materials, as well as any additional resources, will be uploaded weekly to the course e-learning platform.

Assessment Methods

Assessment consists of a written examination (for which only a paper-based monolingual dictionary is permitted) and an oral examination (covering the topics addressed during the course), both of which are mandatory. Marks are awarded on a scale of thirty (out of thirty). Admission to the oral examination is conditional upon passing the written examination. The final grade is calculated as the arithmetic mean of the marks obtained in the two components. Students are advised, when registering for the examination, to verify whether the scheduled session refers to the written or to the oral component.

Particular consideration will be given to the linguistic competence acquired in managing various tourism-related situations; the level of accuracy and clarity in presenting and promoting the local artistic, cultural, and environmental heritage for tourism purposes (including customs, culture, history, traditions, and places of interest); the ability to understand the needs expressed by clients, businesses, and local tourism facilities; and the capacity to provide information that is accurate in terms of content, vocabulary, and grammar.

The result of the written examination (unless expressly rejected by the student by email notification to the Lecturer within seven working days from the date of publication) remains valid for registration for the oral examinations in any subsequent session of the 2025–2026 academic year (that is, until the January/February 2027 examination sessions).

Contents

The course focuses on topics including customer management (such as welcoming guests, providing information, responding appropriately to requests, and handling complaints); replying to requests for information (for example, regarding cultural events, trade fairs, and exhibitions); providing transport and travel information (such as public transport timetables, car or motorbike rental services, and directions to tourist attractions); conducting telephone conversations effectively; managing arrivals and departures, bookings and booking modifications; understanding customer requests in restaurant and bar settings; explaining how to access the various departments and services within a facility; providing information on opening and closing times of services; managing online reviews and enhancing the company’s online visibility in the tourism sector; addressing complaints and critical issues with authority and professionalism; describing weather conditions; responding to emergency requests; and answering frequently asked questions in a professional manner.

The course also includes hours of face-to-face instruction devoted to the study and further development of general German vocabulary, grammar, and phonetics.
