Syllabus
Obiettivi Formativi
Behavioral and experimental economics are two flourishing research programs in recent economic analysis. Generally speaking, behavioral economics studies the effects on economic behavior of psychological factors that were neglected by traditional economic analysis, and advances a series of new models that capture those psychological factors. Experimental economics tests the validity of economic theories, traditional or behavioral they may be, by using experimental methods. Economic experiments may be conducted in artificially designed environments (laboratory experiments) or in natural settings (field experiments).
In the Part 1 of the course (20 hours), Moscati introduces the main concepts, findings, and models of behavioral economics.
In Part 2 (20 hours), Gamba introduces the methodology of experimental economics and guides students in the analysis and critical discussion of selected experimental studies.
At the end of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Describe the main concepts and findings of behavioral economics; 2. Apply the main models of behavioral economics to the analysis of economic decisions; 3. Explain the basic principles and methods of experimental economics; 4. Analyse an experimental economic study, including its design, results and limitations.

Prerequisiti
Basic knowledge of microeconomic theory and the key concepts of game theory.
Metodi didattici
Part 1 is taught through lectures and tutorials. Part 2 combines lectures, student presentations and laboratory classes. Course materials are available on the E-learning platform.
Verifica Apprendimento
The assessment is divided into two parts, corresponding respectively to the topics covered by Moscati and Gamba.
Part 1, worth up to 15 points overall, consists of two open questions and exercises, each worth 7.5 points.
Part 2, worth up to 15 points overall, consists of two open questions, each worth 4.5 points, and a presentation and discussion of an assigned experimental paper, worth up to 6 points. The presentation assesses students’ ability to analyse the experimental design and propose a simple modification or extension.
Open questions are evaluated on the basis of correctness, completeness, clarity, and appropriate use of the concepts covered in the course. The presentation is evaluated on the basis of the quality and critical depth of the analysis, the appropriateness of the proposed modification or extension, and the clarity of the exposition.
The written test lasts 75 minutes. The final grade is expressed on a 30-point scale. The first general exam will take place in January 2027. The exact dates of the first and the following general exams will be posted asap.

Contenuti
Part 1 (Moscati): Decision making: (i) in riskless situations; (ii) in situations of risk; (iii) over time; (iv) in strategic situations. For each type of decision-making, the lecturer first discusses the so-called neoclassical (aka mainstream) theory of decision-making, and then moves to the corresponding behavioral theories.
Part 2 (Gamba): Experimental methodology: (i) principles and methods of experimental economics; (ii) core elements of experimental design; (iii) analysis and critical discussion of selected experimental studies; (iv) formulation of simple design modifications or extensions.
