Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course has the task of providing the knowledge of chemical / physical characteristics and reactivity of molecules on the basis of their functional groups, and the chemistry applied to daily life, especially in conditions of pregnancy and lactation. For this reason, the course will be divided into two parts: inorganic and organic, based on the presence or not of the carbon atom. In the inorganic part, much attention will be paid to the solution of exercises which concerns the concentration of the mixtures, the dilutions, and the pH. Lastly, the course opts to provide a unique chemical vocabulary and scientific terminology to be able to face the subsequent teachings.

Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- recognize the chemical-physical and reactivity characteristics of molecules on the basis of their functional groups;
- be able to resolve problems on the concentration and pH of solutions.

Course Prerequisites

The course requires a basic knowledge of Chemistry that meets the threshold of a score of 3 in the Chemistry questions for the admission test. For those who do not meet the prerequisite, specific Additional Educational Obligations (OFA) will be identified, to be completed within the first year of the course, as described in detail in the Educational Path of the integrated Biomedical Sciences course.

Teaching Methods

Oral lectures in a classroom, presentation of topics and discussions with the students on chemistry applied in everyday life. Lessons are provided in the form of a presentation via e-learning.

Assessment Methods

A written exam that includes a test of 15 multiple choice questions with 5 answers, of which 1 right, and the resolution of two short problems with the aim of verifying the knowledge of the characteristics of chemical molecules, examples of molecules and actions found in daily clinical practice (e.g. dilutions or pH detection in physiological samples). The exam lasts 40 minutes and the grade is considered sufficient when in both parts the answers reach a sufficient grade.

Contents

The chemical bond, solutions, chemical reactions and chemical balance, pH, functional groups of molecules in organic chemistry such as: hydrocarbons, alcohols and their derivatives, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, amines, isomers, carbohydrates, amino acids and lipids. Nomenclature of molecules.
