Assessment Methods
The final assessment consists of a multiple-choice test including questions covering all the topics addressed during the course (cytology, histology, and anatomy).
Contents
Cell membrane: structure, functions, and specializations. Cytoplasmic organelles: smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, phagocytic vesicles, mitochondria, cytoskeleton and centriole: structure and function. Nucleus: morphology and composition. DNA, RNA. Brief overview of protein synthesis. Mitosis and meiosis. Epithelial tissue: covering (lining) epithelium, classification, membrane specializations; glandular epithelium, exocrine and endocrine glandular epithelia, cytology of secretion. Connective tissues: connective tissue proper, ground substance; cartilage tissue; bone tissue. Blood: plasma and blood cells. Muscle tissue: skeletal (striated), smooth, cardiac. Nervous tissue: neuron, Nissl bodies, processes, nerve fibers, synapse, neuromuscular junction. Glial cells.
LABORATORY Preparation of histological specimens for light microscopy: Complete processing of tissue samples including fixation, dehydration, embedding, sectioning, slide preparation, staining procedures, and subsequent observation under the light microscope. Microscopic identification of tissues: Identification and analysis under the light microscope of the different normal (healthy) tissues covered during the course.
