Course Objectives


On successful completion of the course, students will be able to: • Demonstrate a solid understanding of the basic principles of human anatomy. • Describe the structural and functional organisation of the body’s major systems and organs. • Explain the relationships between anatomical form and physiological function. • Identify key elements of functional and clinical anatomy relevant to subsequent applied and clinical studies.

Course Prerequisites


Basic knowledge of biology, chemistry, histology and anatomy.

Teaching Methods


Oral lectures supported by selected media (images and videos, in Italian and English).

Assessment Methods


The examination consists of 30 multiple-choice questions to be completed within 60 minutes. No points are deducted for incorrect answers and the minimum passing score is 18 out of 30.

Contents


• Osteology, arthrology and myology of the trunk and skull; introductory overview of the upper and lower limbs. • Respiratory system: upper and lower airways, lungs, pleurae. • Digestive system: oral cavity, pharynx, oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, liver, pancreas, peritoneal cavity. • Urinary system: kidneys, ureters, bladder, male and female urethra. • Male and female reproductive systems: gonads, spermatic ducts, uterus and vagina (general overview). • Endocrine system: general principles. • Central nervous system: structural organisation; spinal cord morphology and organisation of grey and white matter; brainstem, diencephalon, telencephalon and cerebellum. • Motor pathways (pyramidal, extrapyramidal, visceral motor) and sensory pathways (epicritic and protopathic sensation, proprioception, visceral sensation). • Peripheral nervous system: definition of nerves, ganglia; cranial nerves; organisation of spinal nerves; nerve plexuses (general overview). • Sense organs (general overview). • Autonomic nervous system: sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions (general principles).
