The laboratory aims to provide participants with a foundational understanding of the different types of extended reality (Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality, Virtual Reality). A second objective is to equip students with theoretical tools to comprehend and evaluate the main applications of Augmented Reality in the enhancement of cultural heritage and territorial promotion. Additionally, the laboratory offers practical tools to assess and design cultural and tourism content in augmented reality, tailored to specific communication needs. The course aims for students to be able to analyze and critically discuss Augmented Reality experiences and the issues presented during lectures, developing a critical perspective on the topics covered and their interpretations.
Course Prerequisites
Basic skills on audiovisual language and the contemporary media scenario
Teaching Methods
The workshop adopts an active and participatory learning approach. Alongside lectures aimed at clarifying theoretical perspectives and core concepts, students will engage in guided analyses of selected case studies and may take part in discussions with industry professionals. Students will be required to present independent analyses and participate in a group project—either simulated or based on a real-world scenario—in order to foster problem-solving skills, collaboration, and critical thinking.
Assessment Methods
Assessment will be based on the design of an Augmented Reality experience, developed through a group project work. The evaluation of the project will consider: the appropriateness of the media strategy in relation to the chosen context, the effectiveness of the communication in relation to the target audience, compliance with the writing and formatting rules required by the selected application, and the team's problem-solving abilities. The presentation will be assessed based on the effectiveness of the communication, the acquisition of discipline-specific terminology, and the students’ autonomy in critical judgment. Active participation in class activities will also contribute to the final assessment.
Contents
The workshop aims to provide an overview of the potential applications of Extended Reality in the cultural and tourism sectors, with a particular focus on the use of Augmented Reality in developing new narratives of the territory, constructing cultural heritage, and fostering urban regeneration. Various national and international case studies will be presented, analysed and discussed in order to understand how AR apps can enrich and enhance historical sites, works of art and artefacts, offering engaging and informative experiences.
