Course Objectives

The general objective of the course is to analyze the theoretical and applied references of developmental psychology, drawing on studies and research conducted in this field. Particular attention will be devoted to language development across the lifespan, to preadolescence and adolescence, and to future orientation. The specific objectives are as follows: - To acquire basic knowledge of developmental and lifespan psychology, with particular reference to language development. - To develop the ability to critically analyze theories, models, and research in developmental and lifespan psychology. - To gain an understanding of the psychological characteristics of the different stages of life (childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age). - To explore in depth the theme of future orientation in the different stages of life, namely the individual’s ability to imagine their own future and to assess the long-term consequences of their actions.

Course Prerequisites

An adequate knowledge of the Italian language is required (at least B2), while no preliminary knowledge of psychology is necessary, as the first part of the course and the related teaching material introduce the discipline.

Teaching Methods

The teaching activities will be conducted through lectures, during which the professor will illustrate the course concepts using multimedia tools (e.g., images and videos of experiments, analysis of emblematic cases, and research studies). Active participation of students is encouraged. Students will be involved in guided classroom discussions led by the professor, as well as interactive activities. Exercises, and individual or group tasks that will be assigned. All students, whether attending or not, are required to use the educational materials provided by the professor on the e-learning portal. They could also reach the professor by email for any questions of appointments.

Assessment Methods

The exam will consist of an oral interview aimed at assessing the acquisition and correct understanding, as well as critical analysis, of the topics of the course. The final grade will take into account the accuracy and quality of responses, as well as communicative skills and the ability to articulate and adequately justify statements, establish connections, and provide relevant examples. At the exam, each student will be required to simulate a presentation to a secondary school or adult class on a book, film, or scientific article related to one or more topics covered during the course, preparing an original electronic presentation. The presentation must consist of a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 7 slides, created on the student’s own laptop or printed, and presented to the examination board. The board will assign from 0 to 3 points for the presentation during the exam, also assessing the candidate’s ability to present the content. It is not required to agree on the presentation topic with the lecturer or to receive prior approval before the exam. However, students must upload their presentation to the course page on the e-learning platform when registering for the exam. Uploading the presentation to the e-learning platform will not result in any assessment, as the evaluation will take place exclusively during the oral exam.

Contents

The course is organized into three modules: 1) An introductory section on psychology as a science, particularly developmental psychology and lifespan psychology, its research methods, and the main traditional and ecological theories of human development. 2) An institutional section, which will address the main psychological aspects related to children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly, with particular attention to linguistic development. 3) A monographic section will focus on an in-depth exploration of the theme of future orientation and on how teachers can support students in developing an articulated and confident vision of their future, learning to imagine possible scenarios, to reflect on the long-term consequences of their choices, and to acquire tools for planning personal, educational, and professional pathways in a conscious and realistic way.
