Homo sanus in natura sana: ambiente e humanitas nella Roma imperiale e tardoantica

A close relationship between environment and civilization was something well known in Rome, to the point of comparing an attitude of a certain quality toward nature as an example to follow even for social and political rectitude. Likewise, many have written about how the environment explicitly marked certain peoples, emphasizing certain physical and behavioral characteristics. Through an excursus among various literary sources, including Cicerone, Tacito Plinio il Vecchio, Columella e Temistio, an attempt will be made to analyze this link that the Romans recognized between nature and humanitas, particularly in its purely political and propagandistic implications.
