Abstract:
Clinical organ and tissue transplantation poses significant recipient risks, particularly donor transmitted infections and malignancies, which must be weighed against the benefits of receiving a transplant in the context of organ shortages. Regional and national governments have enacted regulations to ensure safety from the moment of donor identification to postoperative transplant recipient follow-up. This colloquium/supplement of the proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Infections in Organ Transplantation held in Varese, Italy, on March 17–19, 2011, comprises 19 presentations (sections) dealing with various aspects of donor-transmitted diseases and recipints' derived infections.
