Overview

Maria Paola Bissiri is an Associate Professor of German Language, Translation and Linguistics (GERM-01/C) at the Department of Theoretical and Applied Sciences (DiSTA) of the Università degli Studi dell'Insubria, and has been President of the degree programme in Interlinguistic and Intercultural Mediation Studies since 2025. She obtained her PhD in Phonetics and Speech Processing from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, in joint supervision with the Università degli Studi di Sassari. She has been awarded three Marie Curie Fellowships and has held research positions at international institutions, including Charles University, Technische Universität Dresden, and Queen Margaret University. In Italy, she was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Linguistics Laboratory of the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. Her main research interests include German–Italian contrastive phonetics, the acquisition of German as a second language, speech articulation, and the perception of German in comparison with other languages.

Description

Maria Paola Bissiri has been, since November 2022, Associate Professor of German Language, Translation, and Linguistics (GERM-01/C) at the Department of Theoretical and Applied Sciences (DiSTA) of the University of Insubria, and has also served as President of the degree programme in Interlinguistic and Intercultural Mediation Sciences since February 2025.
She obtained her PhD in Phonetics and Speech Processing in 2008 from the Institut für Phonetik und Sprachverarbeitung at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, in joint supervision with the University of Sassari.
She has been awarded three Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowships: she was a Marie Curie Experienced Research Fellow in the Research and Training Network (MC-RTN) Sound to Sense at the Institute of Phonetics of Charles University in Prague (2010–2011), held a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship for Career Development (IEF) at the Institute of Acoustics of the Technical University of Dresden (2012–2014), and a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship for Career Development (IEF) at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh (2014–2016).
She was also a research fellow at the Linguistics Laboratory of the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa (2017–2019).
Her main research interests include contrastive phonetics between German and Italian, the acquisition of German as a second language, speech articulation, and the perception of German in comparison with other languages.
