RASPANTI MARIO

Mario Raspanti was born on August, 26 1956 in Castel San Pietro Terme near Bologna, Italy. After classical studies he entered Biological Sciences at the Bologna University, where he frequented the Electron Microscopy Laboratory of the Anatomical Institute as a resident student. After earning his degree (cum laude) he spent a period of study in the Abteilung fur Elektronenmikroskopie of the Medizinische Hochschule in Hannover, and for fifteen years he was technical manager of the Electron Microscopy Laboratory of the Institute of Human Anatomy of the Bologna University, taking actively part in all the research carried on in this structure and devising original preparation and investigation techniques in the fields of optical microscopy, TEM, high resolution SEM, freeze-etching, atomic force microscopy, image analysis and three-dimensional modelling.
In 1998 he joined the University of Insubria as an Associate Professor at the Laboratory of Human Morphology, where he added the new Atomic Force Microscopy laboratory to the Scanning Electron Microscopy laboratory. Since 2001 he has been a Full Professor of Human Anatomy, and since 2021 he has been the Doyen of the School of Medicine.
He is a member of the Italian Society of Anatomy and Histology (SIAI), of the International Society of Matrix Biology (ISMB), and of the Italian Society of Microscopic Sciences (SISM), on whose Scientific Council he served for two terms. He also served as vice president of the Society for the Study of Connective Tissue (SISC, now the Italian Society of Matrix Biology) for two terms.
His scientific production exceeds 130 peer-reviewed articles (Scopus), mainly focused on the extracellular matrix and its components - collagen, elastin, proteoglycans, mineral phase, its architecture and its functional aspects.
