He has expertise in building physics and building performance simulation and optimization, and his research interests range from the computer-aided design of adaptive and responsive building components, smart buildings and zero-emission neighbourhoods, to the evaluation of the indoor environmental quality, energy use, and occupant behaviour in buildings. Currently, he is working on estimating the impacts of climate change on the energy performance of buildings and heat-related stress for building occupants.
He served as one of the subtask leaders of Annex 79 on “Occupant-centric building design and operation”, promoted by the International Energy Agency (IEA). He has contributed as a partner to several projects funded by the European Union belonging to the Intelligent Energy Europe, the Seventh Framework, the Horizon 2020 and the Horizon Europe Programmes, and three Annexes approved by the International Energy Agency.
He is a member of the editorial board of three peer-reviewed scientific journals (Energy and Buildings, Energy Efficiency and Energies), a reviewer for several international journals and an evaluator of research projects for a few international universities and research foundations.
Carlucci has published more than 100 scientific papers and contributed to nine books on occupant-centric building design and operation, indoor environmental quality (thermal, visual and acoustic comfort, and indoor air quality), sustainable, smart and low-energy buildings, building performance simulation and optimization, and building physics.

Overview (3)
"Modeling and simulation of occupant behavior (Occupant Behavior)"
Research focused on the definition, formalization, and implementation of occupant behavior models (presence, use of systems and controls, ventilation/window opening, shading, lighting) and on quantifying their impact on energy use, comfort, and building performance. Development and use of datasets, calibration methods, and integration workflows to embed behavior models into building performance simulation tools, with the aim of reducing predictive uncertainty and improving decision-making in design and performance assessment.
"Occupant-centric building design and operation"
Research dedicated to the systematic integration of comfort, preferences, and user–building interactions into design processes and building operation (commissioning, control, energy management, and facility management). Development and transfer of methods, tools, and guidelines enabling more adaptive and resilient buildings, improving both energy performance and Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ). This line includes scientific coordination contributions as Subtask Leader within IEA-EBC Annex 79.
"Thermal comfort and indoor environmental quality in low-energy buildings"
Research aimed at understanding and applying the adaptive thermal comfort paradigm in low-energy buildings, analyzing occupants’ adaptation mechanisms (behavioral, physiological, and psychological) and translating evidence into criteria and operational procedures for indoor environment design and management. Support to the development of passive and low-energy strategies, assessment methods, and evidence-based guidelines and databases, with a focus on balancing comfort, health/well-being, and energy-demand reduction.

International Energy Agency Energy (IEA-EBC) Annex 79 - Occupant-Centric Building Design and Operation

International Energy Agency Energy (IEA-EBC) Annex 69 - Strategy and Practice of Adaptive Thermal Comfort in Low Energy Buildings

International Energy Agency (IEA-EBC) Annex 66 - Definition and Simulation of Occupant Behavior in Buildings
