COSTANZO SIMONA

Associate Professor (SSD MEDS-24/B –Hygiene and Public Health) at the Department of Medicine and Surgery, University of Insubria (Varese), tenured since January 2025. She conducts research at the Research Center in Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine (EPIMED).
Since 2013, she has been a Senior Researcher at IRCCS Neuromed (Pozzilli). Previously, she was a researcher at the Catholic University (2005–2013, Campobasso).
She gained international experience as a Visiting Scientist at the Department of Nutrition, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (2017).
Her teaching activities cover Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Public Health within the degree programs of Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry, and Health Professions at the University of Insubria. She has previously held teaching appointments at Sapienza University, Tor Vergata University, and the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart. She is also a member of the Academic Board for the PhD in Public Health at the University of Milano-Bicocca.
She holds a PhD in Epidemiology from Maastricht University (2012), a Second-level Professional Master in Epidemiology (Catholic University, Rome, 2005), and a Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology (Sapienza University of Rome, 2003). She obtained the National Scientific Qualification (ASN) as Associate Professor (sector 06/M1) in the 2018–2020 session.
As Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI of numerous national and international research projects (Ministry of Health, AIFA, PNRR, ERAB, OIV), her research focuses on nutritional epidemiology, alcohol consumption, multimorbidity, and the prevention of cardiovascular, oncological, and neurodegenerative diseases.
She has authored over 230 indexed scientific publications (Scopus), with more than 41,000 citations and an h-index of 60. She is frequently invited as a speaker at international conferences.
Member of national and international scientific societies, including AIE, SItI, EuPHA, and SISMEC.
