Ester Papa is an Associate Professor of Environmental and Cultural Heritage Chemistry at the University of Insubria, holding the Italian National Scientific Qualification for Full Professor in Analytical Chemistry. She is an international expert in computational chemistry and QSAR modeling, applied to chemical, ecotoxicological, and regulatory risk assessment of chemicals and emerging pollutants.
She leads the QSAR Research Unit in Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology, coordinating interdisciplinary projects and international collaborations. Her research experience includes periods at leading European centers, including Liverpool John Moores University, Umeå University, and Université Paris Diderot.
In addition to her research on the development, validation and application of QSAR models, she coordinates the development of internationally recognized open-access QSAR software. Her work is documented in over 80 publications in high-impact journals. She participates in national and international projects, serves on international editorial boards, has acted as a reviewer for the European Research Council and the European Commission, and contributes to the scientific governance of SETAC and the Italian Chemical Society (2013–2015). Description
Ester Papa is an Associate Professor of Environmental and Cultural Heritage Chemistry at the University of Insubria and holds the Italian National Scientific Qualification for Full Professor in Analytical Chemistry. She is internationally recognized for expertise in computational environmental chemistry and QSAR modeling, focusing on the development, validation, and application of quantitative structure-activity models for chemical, ecotoxicological, and regulatory risk assessment of chemicals and emerging pollutants.
At the Department of Theoretical and Applied Sciences, she leads the QSAR Research Unit in Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology, coordinating interdisciplinary research and collaborations with universities, regulatory agencies, and international research institutions. Her academic training spans Italy and leading European centers, including research periods at Liverpool John Moores University, Umeå University, and Université Paris Diderot.
She oversees the development of internationally recognized open-access QSAR software, technically implemented by Dr. Nicola Chirico since 2012, for constructing, validating, and applying predictive models aligned with international regulatory frameworks. Her scientific output includes over 80 publications in high-impact international journals and a notable bibliometric profile.
Prof. Papa participates in national and international research projects, collaborates with international institutions, serves on editorial boards of peer-reviewed journals, and acted as reviewer for the European Research Council and European Commission initiatives in computational toxicology. She contributes to scientific governance in leading societies such as SETAC and the Italian Chemical Society (2013-2015) and to the organization of national and international congresses and schools. Since 2024, she is listed among the World’s Top 2% Scientists (Stanford University–Elsevier).

Overview
The research activity of Prof. Ester Papa is focused on the application of chemometric methods and modelling approaches (computational chemistry) to study several topics related to human health, environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology, and drug design. Prof. Papa is an expert in the development and validation of models based on Quantitative Structure-Activity relationships (QSAR) to predict toxicological and ecotoxicological endpoints for conventional and emerging pollutants, industrial chemicals and nanoparticles. This activity includes studies regarding the use of chemometric methods to prioritize and safely design chemicals (Green Chemistry), and the integration of QSAR models within risk assessment frameworks.
Among the main topics addressed in the last 15 years there are: the bioaccumulation and biotransformation of organic chemicals in fish and mammals, the prediction and prioritization of persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic chemicals (PBTs), the prediction of physico chemical and (eco)toxicological properties of emerging pollutants (such as endocrine disruptors, perfluorinated compounds, triazoles and benzotriazoles, brominated flame retardants, pharmaceuticals and fragrances), and the study of biological activities and partitioning properties of heterogeneous nanoparticles and microplastics. Between 2012 and 2019 she was involved in the development of the software QSARINS (QSAR models development and validation).
Furthermore, she supervised the development of the software QSARINS-Chem Standalone version (2020), QSARINS - Chem ECO 44 (2021) and IVBP-Suite (2021) freely downloadable at https://dunant.dista.uninsubria.it/qsar/
