PAROLA ALBERTO GIOVANNI GIUSEPPE

My research activity mainly focused on statistical mechanics and theoretical condensed matter physics. In particular, I studied models of strongly correlated systems like simple fluids in the critical region and magnetic systems in the calssical or quantum regime. These models have been treated by use of numerical and analytical methods more sophisticated than standard perturbative expansions or mean field approaches.My scientific activity is testified by more than a hundred publications on international journals during 20 years of research work in condensed matter physics. Among the results relevant for this proposal, I emphasize the first exact evaluation of the asymptotic behavior of a correlation function in the one dimensional Hubbard model, the study of dynamical properties of a hole in a one dimensional antiferromagnet, the formulation of a new semiclassical method for dealing with models of quantum magnets, the implementation in quantum mechanics of non perturbative approaches inspired to renormalization group techniques, the development of sophisticated numerical codes for Lanczos diagonalization of strongly correlated electron systems and the analysis of a novel class of variational wave functions for frustrated antiferromagnets. Moreover I developed a new non linear Schroedinger equation (called non-polinomial) to investigate the dynamical properties of a Bose condensate confined in a quasi one dimensional trap. I also formulated the Hierarchical Reference Theory of fluids for describing phase transitions in liquids. HRT is now included in textbooks of liquid state theory.More recently I proposed a general framework for the theoretical modelling of non equilibrium processes, like thermophoresis, in colloidal suspensions. In close collaboration with experimental groups I also gave a theoretical interpretation of sedimentation phenomena in colloidal mixtures.
