Research Line: Adipose Tissue. This research line examines the different compartments of facial adipose tissue, analysing their structural and ultrastructural features to describe their organisation and to identify age‑related changes. It further investigates the various compartments of visceral adipose tissue, with the aim of highlighting ultrastructural differences in adipocyte organisation and in the composition of the extracellular matrix. These studies rely on a comprehensive set of methodologies, including light and electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and molecular biology techniques.
Research Line: Collagen, Hard Tissues, and Mineralisation. This research line focuses on the organisation of collagen fibres, the architecture of the extracellular matrix, and the mechanisms that underpin mineralisation processes. These topics are explored through an integrated methodological framework combining light microscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM and SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), together with advanced imaging techniques, immunohistochemistry, molecular biology, and three‑dimensional (3D) scanning and printing technologies. Particular emphasis is placed on the structural organisation and morphometric characterisation of tendon and ligament collagen fibres. The overarching aim is to identify potential structural vulnerabilities and to evaluate the suitability of these tissues for surgical applications, particularly in relation to the reconstruction and replacement of injured ligaments.
Research Line: Micro- and Nanoplastics. This research line investigates micro‑ and nanoplastics released from dental materials in both in vivo and ex vivo experimental models, with the aim of assessing their impact on cells and tissues. The studies employ a comprehensive methodological approach that includes light microscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, advanced imaging techniques, immunohistochemistry, and molecular biology.
