CLERICI MATTEO

Prof. Matteo Clerici is an Associate Professor at the University of Insubria (Como, Italy). He previously served as Full Professor of Photonics at the University of Glasgow (United Kingdom) until September 2023, a position he attained after holding the roles of Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the same institution; he remains affiliated with the University of Glasgow. In this context, he founded and led, as Principal Investigator, the Ultrafast Nonlinear Optics research group, developing a research activity of international standing.

Prof. Clerici’s scientific activity focuses primarily on quantum optics in the visible and infrared spectral regions, THz photonics, and the physics of epsilon-near-zero materials, with pioneering contributions in the field of ultrafast and quantum optics in the infrared domain.

He is the author of more than 80 peer-reviewed publications in international scientific journals, including Nature Communications, Science Advances, Physical Review Letters, Optica, Laser & Photonics Reviews, and Optica Quantum. He is also the inventor of three granted patents. He has delivered more than 65 invited talks at international conferences (including three keynote lectures) and is the author of more than 150 conference contributions, including three post-deadline papers.

Throughout his academic career, he has carried out extensive teaching and supervisory activities, particularly at the University of Glasgow, where he supervised five PhD students and three postdoctoral researchers (over a total period of approximately five years), in addition to numerous undergraduate and Master’s students. He has also held institutional roles in academic and teaching coordination.

In 2014, he received the Sergio Panizza Award of the Italian Physical Society for his contributions to THz photonics and was elected URSI Senior Member in 2020. In 2025, he was elected Optica Fellow for pioneering experiments in the field of ultrafast and quantum optics in the infrared region of the spectrum.

In 2024, he founded the Como Lake Institute of Photonics, where he serves as Director. He is also Co-Head of the Quantum and Ultrafast Photonics Lab at the University of Insubria, where he carries out research, teaching, and scientific coordination activities.
