Inverse Problems in the Imaging Sciences

Progetto
The strategic objectives of the PRIN 2022 project “Inverse Problems in the Imaging Sciences” (IPIS) were, in the short term, to push forward the state-of-the-art of imaging sciences, with specific focus on approaches inspired by inverse problems theory; in the medium term, to make the IPIS network as a first embryo for a computational imaging center, diffused across Italy and open to contributions from all mathematicians interested in imaging applications.
The project expected outcomes included the development of:
• unifying perspectives to regularization;
• generalization results in optimization;
• new numerical linear algebra and regularization algorithms;
• solution of inverse problems within the AI framework.
New theoretical and numerical results were obtained within the mentioned approaches, and were applied to applicative research areas, including linear and non-linear tomography, optical imaging, Fourier-based imaging, parametric nuclear imaging, applied geophysics, preservation of cultural heritage.
Participants published 64 research papers on international journals and 7 peer-reviewed conference papers; 17 papers were submitted for publication before the project end. A public software repository was realized to disseminate 12 packages developed during the project.
The obtained results were presented in 100 conference talks, and 23 events (special sessions in conferences or summer schools) were organized. During the final Stakeholder Workshop, specific applications developed by project participants were presented to 6 technological start-ups.
